CRANBERRY LAKE -- The Cranberry Lake Volunteer Fire Department sponsors the 2017 “First Strike” Cranberry Lake Ice Fishing Derby Saturday, Jan. 28.

The tournament, in its eighth year, will run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Known for its legendary fishing, Cranberry Lake is the third largest lake in the Adirondacks and one of the most popular fishing destinations, both summer and winter.

The entry fee for the pike competition is $35 for adults and kids, and $10 for the perch derby for kids 12 and under if registered by Jan. 23. Also, registrations postmarked by Jan. 23 are eligible for a drawing for a Yeti cooler. Pike entry fee after Jan. 23 will be $40.

Cash prizes will be awarded for first through fifth places for the children’s perch derby. Every child who enters will receive a prize.

In the adult category hourly cash prizes will go to through third places. In addition, dozens of door prizes will be awarded. Up to $10,000 in total cash and prizes will be awarded.

According to Derby Chairperson Karen Soltau, the extraordinary fishing, along with generous prizes, have made this one of the most memorable ice fishing tournaments in the northeast. “We look forward to welcoming fisherman from all over the North Country, surrounding states and Canada,” she said.

Due to the size of the tournament, Soltau strongly recommends early registration by mail. Registration forms and derby rules are available at www.cranberrylakefire.org or email kjsoltau@rocketmail.com. Updates are available on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/CranberryLakeFireDepartment.
