POTSDAM -- St. Lawrence County farmers can be authorized to accept WIC Fruit and Vegetable Checks at farmers’ markets by attending a session at the Potsdam Public Library from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 15.
These checks, part of the WIC nutrition program, are good for fresh and packaged fruit and vegetables at grocery stores, and can be spent locally on produce at farmers markets as well. With more farmers authorized to accept these checks, more of this money will stay in local communities, and more WIC families will be able to provide the freshest fruits and vegetables to their families.
“With the large number of moms receiving WIC services in St. Lawrence County, this is a substantial income opportunity for our local farmers,” said GardenShare Executive Director Aviva Gold.
GardenShare and Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County are hosting the training session.
Farmers who are enrolled in the Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program are eligible to participate. Attendees should bring a voided check to the event to include with the necessary paperwork.
