CANTON -- In conjunction with Canton Canoe Weekend, former Adirondack Museum curator Hallie Bond will present a discussion about the rich heritage of the Adirondack small boat Friday, May 1 at 5 p.m. at TAUNY, 53 Main St. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.
Ever since Ralph Waldo Emerson took a trip through the Adirondacks in a small boat, millions of Americans have seen an Adirondack vacation as the antidote to the stresses of daily life.
"Boats and Boating in the Adirondacks" will illustrate this story with Rushton boats and Rushton customers like Frederic Remington and Necoochee, O.V. Coffin and Wanderer, and, Rushton’s friend and most famous customer, Nessmuk and his Sairy Gamp.
Bond will also display a 12½ foot Vaux Junior model open paddling canoe built by J.H. Rushton between 1903 and 1905—the sort of boat that Bond contends is Rushton’s lasting contribution to the sport of paddling.
