New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) fisheries biologists will artificially propagate lake sturgeon species reproduction at the Robert Moses Power Project.
DEC says this is in an effort to reestablish sturgeon populations in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence river and tributaries.
During the event, eggs will be removed from female sturgeon and fertilized. The fertilized eggs will then be taken to a fish hatchery and eventually released into the waters once matured.
Lake sturgeon are a threatened species. DEC has worked with federal and New York Power Authority officials to protect and restore Lake Sturgeon throughout New York.
The event will be at 830 Barnhart Island Road, a NYPA property, at 9 a.m. DEC says people will need photo ID for “security reasons.”
Sturdy boots are required due to muddy conditions.
