Cycling, hiking, paddling events scheduled by Adirondack Mountain Club’s Laurentian Chapter this summer

The Laurentian Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) has scheduled cycling tours, hiking and paddling events for public activities this summer.

Those who have questions about or want to go on a particular event should contact the leader listed for that event.

The Laurentian Chapter welcomes the public to take part in these events.

• Saturday, July 11: Cycling from Ingleside to Morrisburg. Follows Ontario's Waterfront Trail along the St. Lawrence, on bike paths and some paved shoulders. Bird sanctuary, Upper Canada Village, site of the War of 1812 Battle of Crysler's Farm, swimming. 30 miles round trip, moderate. John Barron, 613-828-2296 or johnbarron@sympatico.ca

• Wednesday, July 22: Evening paddle and picnic on Brandy Brook near Waddington. Bring a sack supper. Tom Ortmeyer, 265-8219, tortmeye@gmail.com.

• Saturday, July 25: Hike Big Slide in the High Peaks, a 9.5 mile round trip with some steep parts. Over 2,000 foot ascent, moderate (not slow) pace, strenuous. Great views, possible swim. Debbie White, 322-4066 or dwhite46r@gmail.com.

• Saturday, Aug. 1: Bike the Seaway Trail in Massena, from Robert Moses State Park, along the St. Lawrence towards Wilson Hill. Explore trails near Alcoa, the Massena Intake, Massena Beach and Country Club, and Whalen Park. 30 miles round trip, relatively flat. Jeanna Matthews, jeanna.matthews@gmail.com.

• Saturday, Aug. 8: Hike Indian Head and Fish Hawk Cliffs, east of High Peaks. Hike to a lovely overlook of Ausable Lake, then a long gentle climb on a dirt road to the lake, then steep trails to the cliffs. 10.5 miles, elevation gain 750 ft., strenuous. • Saturday, Aug. 15: 1000 Islands Sampler. Pot luck picnic lunch in pavilion, Alexandria Bay, followed by easy hike on trails near Nature Center, Wellesley Island State Park. Some people may want to stay on for dinner in the area. Lila Hunnewell, 854-8000.

• Saturday, Aug. 22: Cycling to Kring Point State Park on the St. Lawrence. Bicycle from a scenic overlook on Route 12 to Kring Point State Park, lunch, relax, and swim, and then return for a total of 30 miles. Moderate. Tom Ortmeyer, 265-8219, tortmeye@gmail.com.

• Monday, Sept. 7: Hike Wolf Lake State Park Hike. A 5.2-mile loop over undulating terrain to three attractive glacial lakes, each with a lean-to, in a state forest near Edwards. Easy. Neal Burdick, 386-4648, nealburdick@gmail.com.

• Saturday, Sept. 12: Hike Catamount, a medium-sized mountain not far from Whiteface. Features much open rock, a climb through "the chimney," and sweeping views from the summit. 6 miles round trip, 1600 ft. elevation gain, moderate. John Barron, 613-828-2296, johnbarron@sympatico.ca.

• Saturday, Sept. 19: Azure Mountain Bushwhack and Summit Rock Work. Bushwhack up the south side of the mountain south of St. Regis Falls and then spend some time placing rocks carried to the summit in erosion concern areas. 2 miles round trip, relaxed pace, moderate. • Saturday, Sept. 26: Hike on the Cranberry Lake 50 trail. Follow recently constructed segment bypassing road walking along route 3. Quite scenic with mature deciduous woods, a beaver flow, and a pleasant trail bed. 5 miles in total, easy. Tom Wheeler, 386-2482 or northflow@gmail.com.
