POTSDAM -- The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam will welcome back a recent graduate, bassist Joe Goehle, to perform with his band, Cerebral People, on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

Cerebral People will perform a program mostly consisting of original compositions written by Goehle, alongside a selection of classic jazz tunes like "Sweet Little Maia" by Jimmy Garrison, "Free" by Ornette Coleman and "Dewey's Tune" by Dewey Redman.

This concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.

After receiving his Bachelor of Music degree in music education from The Crane School of Music, Joe Goehle went on to earn a Master of Music degree in jazz studies from New York University. He is currently a teacher, performer and composer.

His love of improvised sounds and firm roots in the classical tradition blend together to form a unique voice as a composer. Goehle's compositions feature a mix of free and traditional improvisations that appeal to multiple musical sensibilities. The bassist brings a strong and complex tone to all of his compositions, allowing new interpretations to breathe life into each performance.

Currently residing in New York City, Goehle leads a quintet, Cerebral People, that continues to refine its sound through frequent performances in clubs throughout New York.

The band's self-titled debut album features collaborative compositions that explore free improvisation within the context of a large ensemble. Cerebral People is comprised of Goehle (bass/compositions), Jim Piela (saxophone), John Blevins (trumpet), Alec Dube (vibraphone) and Josh Bailey (percussion).
