CRANBERRY LAKE -- It’s never too early to think about ice fishing in Cranberry Lake, home of the “First Strike” ice fishing derby.
The “First Strike” Cranberry Lake Ice Fishing Derby is scheduled for Jan. 31, 2015. More than 600 people took part in last year’s derby and organizers say they are expecting the 2015 derby to draw more people.
According to Derby Chairperson, Karen Soltau, “by moving the date to the last Saturday in January, we had ideal conditions for ice fishing.”
“The extraordinary fishing, along with generous prizes has made this one of the most memorable ice fishing tournaments in the northeast.” Soltau said.
Entry fees are $30 for adults, and $10 for the children’s perch derby. Cash prizes will be awarded for first through fifth place for the children’s (12 and under) perch derby. Every child who enters will receive a prize.
“Once again, we look forward to welcoming ice fisherman from all over the North Country, surrounding states & Canada. It’s always a remarkable day and lots of fun for the whole family,” Soltau added.
In the adult category, up to $800 per hour in prize money will be awarded. In addition to cash prizes, dozens of door prizes will be awarded.
Last year over $10,000 in total cash and prizes were awarded during the derby.
