CRANBERRY LAKE -- A new play, written by Matthew J. Glavin, the best-selling author of the ‘Adirondack Treasure’ novel series, is set to have its first public reading at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 27 at the Clifton Community Library, 7171 State Route 3.

The play, The Spirit of the Lake is based on a short story Glavin wrote a year ago called, The Legend of Cranberry Lake.

The play is being produced and directed by Kristie Fuller, Theatre Adjunct Professor at SUNY Potsdam and Theatre Teacher at Indian River High School Theatre of the Performing Arts.

According to Fuller, “Our plan is to bring this production next summer, to a number of small communities around the Adirondacks. The purpose of the public reading is to get early feedback from audiences prior to production in order to make final adjustments to the script.”

The play is about a teenage boy who spends a summer in the Adirondacks and meets ‘The Spirit of the Lake.’ The Spirit uses animals to illustrate life’s lessons and helps the boy become a man. “It’s a charming story,” said Fuller. “It’s the kind of story that would appeal to children of all ages.”

Fuller is the Theatre Teacher at Indian River High School where she has developed a sequenced program in Theatre and coordinates the Thespian Honor Society. Her directing credits include: Once on this Island, Seussical, Arsenic and Old Lace, Annie, and the The Miracle Worker.

Several of her productions have received Awards of Excellence in Directing from the Theatre Association of New York State. Her Theatre program was recognized as the Educational Theatre Association’s Outstanding School in 2007 and she was recently awarded the National Reba R. Robertson Award for Outstanding Theatre Teacher. In 2013, Fuller was a part of the American High School Theatre Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.

“I’m thrilled someone with Kristie’s reputation has taken an interest in this project and I look forward to the feedback from the audience,” Glavin said.
