CANTON -- Residents can learn about St. Lawrence County’s application to fund a first-time homebuyer program at a hearing at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 19 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 30 Miner St.
Staff from the county Planning Office and the North Country Housing Council will explain the county’s intent to apply for a $750,000 grant that would assist income-eligible people in purchasing a first house.
The program helps low- to moderate-income households who are having difficulty saving enough to buy a first house. If funded, the county to be able to help 27 households with down payments and closing costs and cover minor repairs to the house. Those participating would attend classes to learn about household budgeting, applying for a mortgage, the day-to-day challenges of owning a house, and caring for and maintaining it.
Those with low to moderate incomes who want to purchase a first house are invited to attend the hearing to learn about and comment on the project.
People with special needs who could benefit from the project are particularly encouraged to attend.
