CANTON -- Cornell University agricultural economist Dr. Andrew Novakovic will present what dairy farmers need to know about the new dairy margin program Sept. 23 at the BOCES Education Service Center Room A, 40 West Main St. from 1 to 3 p.m.

Novakovic is part of the national group of educators working with the USDA to assist farmers in their participation decision and has been involved with the development of MPP over the last three years.

The federal government is offering a new Margin Protection Program/MPP to help dairy producers guard against destructive shortfalls in milk income over costs.

The USDA margin range since January 2007 has fluctuated between $2.49 in May-June 2009 and $14.60 in July-August 2007. The margin rate in May-June 2014 was $11.96.

Basic margin insurance coverage is free, but requires an annual registration fee.
