CANTON – The Cornell Cooperative Extension Learning Farm, 2043B St. Hwy. 68, will sponsor several events for youth during the upcoming winter break.

Most classes are appropriate for ages six and up. Participations fees vary based on each activity and materials needed. Those who attend an afternoon activity are encouraged to bring a bag lunch. Staff supervision is provided during lunchtime. The schedule for the week is as follows:

• Think Spring with Sheep: Feb. 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Pair of Docs Ranch, Heuvelton. Led by owner Carolyn Pierce, she will discuss sheep production, showing and lambing. Lambs will be available for some hands-on experience. Participants may even get to witness the birth of a lamb or two. A lamb related craft project will be led by members of the 4-H club.

• Lights, Mirrors, Solar: Feb. 18 from 10 a.m. to noon with Ryan Siver, 4-H Extended School Day Community Educator. What color are mirrors? How are lasers and LED lights different? How do you make a solar panel? Participants will assist in building a working solar panel. Use lasers and lights to see how far each beam travels. Play with mirrors to figure out what color they really are and why. There is a $5 fee.

• Intro to Model Horse Collecting, Showing and Tack Making: Feb. 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. with 4-H volunteer Brenda Gallagher. Class is for anyone interested in collecting horse photos and models. Gallagher will demonstrate how to set up horse photographs and model horses for display and competition. Participants are encouraged to bring a model horse of any size. Each participant will make a model horse halter to take home with them. A $4 fee is due to cover the cost of materials.

• Youth Sewing Class: Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon with Anita Morrill, Administrative Assistant and Amy Sands, 4-H Community Educator. Class is designed for youth with some experience operating a sewing machine. Participants will make a table runner to take home. All participants must bring a sewing machine in good working order, threaded with full bobbin. Other materials needed are a ½ yard each of two coordinating fabrics, matching thread, scissors, pins, cutting board and rotary cutter if available. There will be a $5 fee.

• Wildlife and Winter Tracking: Feb. 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. with Nicki Hamilton-Honey, 4-H Extended School Day Community Educator. Attendees will explore different types of wildlife, survival methods during the harsh winter months and how to spot wildlife in your backyard. Participants will investigate track patterns and classifications and search for tracks on the farm. Dress in layers and wear boots. There is a $5 fee.

• Snowshoeing With Kristin: Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to noon with Kristin Colarusso, Extension Nutrition Team Coordinator. Join Kristin for an adventurous snowshoeing tour of the farm’s Sugar Bush and surrounding areas. There will be a short class on the ins and outs of snowshoeing before going out. Wear appropriate clothing for being outdoors. Snowshoes will be provided for those who don’t have any. All skill levels are welcome. There is a class limit of 12. The fee is $5.

• Snacks, Snacks and More: Feb. 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. with Alexis Bartocci and Francesca Nastasi, SUNY Potsdam interns. Participants will discover new snack ideas and experiment with preparing and tasting some treats. The fee is $5.

• Winter Birds: Feb. 21 from 10 a.m to noon with Mary Beth Green and Amy Sands, 4-H educators.
