CANTON -- With the St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Tournament starting Aug. 14, kids have until the end of the day Tuesday, Aug 12, to register for the annual contest.

The region’s biggest catch-and-release carp fishing tournament for young anglers is open to boys and girls ages 11 to 18.

This year, trophies, special prizes, and cash prizes totaling $7,500 will be given out to individuals and teams. Adults can fish with kids, too, but aren’t eligible for cash awards.

The tournament begins Thursday afternoon at Madrid-Waddington Central School with sign-ins and the Mort Backus & Sons Fishing School.

Fishing takes place along a 30-mile stretch of the St. Lawrence River from Massena to Ogdensburg on Aug. 15-16. Closing ceremonies are back at the school Saturday evening.

Registration is $125 and covers all activities, including the fishing school and awards ceremony party. For registration forms, visit www.NorthCountryGuide.com or call the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce at 386-4000 or 877-228-7810.

Since 2002, more than 1,300 girls and boys from all over have come to the shores of the St. Lawrence River for the tournament, which was started at the suggestion of British actor and carp angler Tom Felton – best known as Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films. He was Grand Marshal of the first tournament.
