WEST STOCKHOLM -- A benefit concert for the Potsdam Music Friends will be held Friday, May 29, at 7 p.m. at the home of Robin McClellan.

Admission is $10.

The "As Yet Un-named Quartet" will play music ranging from the baroque to newly composed, serious to wacky and familiar tunes to unusual compositions by underplayed composers, according to McClellan.

The quartet includes Laurel Kuxhaus who discovered the oboe in high school and earned her BA in music from Michigan State University. She was a featured soloist with the Cornell University Wind Ensemble, University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and Pittsburgh Philharmonic. She plays locally with the Potsdam Community Band and Northern Symphonic Winds.

Theresa Witmer chose the saxophone in fourth grade after being told that her first choice, percussion, was not for girls. A winner of three collegiate concerto competitions while studying music at Ithaca College, Theresa has performed with the Toledo Symphony and the Orchestra of Northern New York. She plays for Northern Symphonic Winds, occasional jazz bands and music theater orchestras, and is the music director for the Potsdam Community Band.

David Katz, who plays the bassoon and contrabass, discovered music at an early age, pestering his parents for piano lessons before age five. He gave his first public concert in the third grade, providing the music for a school play and went on to study bassoon at the Crane School of Music. He has wide-ranging musical interests, happily playing pretty much any music that crosses his music stand, performing regularly in orchestral, small-ensemble, and solo settings.

Christina Xydias, who will perform on cello and piano, was raised on classical music in the Rochester, area, where she played cello with the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra for four years. She participated in Brown University’s chamber music program and in Brown New Music as an undergraduate, and continued her musical studies as a graduate student at Ohio State University. She began performing locally upon arriving in Potsdam three years ago.
