POTSDAM -- The Local Living Venture (LLV) is hosting the eighth "Composting Made Simple: How-To for Yard & Food Waste" workshop in Potsdam.

In a traditional two- or three-bin composting system most people never seem to get around to the required turning process, making the whole project an exercise in frustration.

This workshop will be held Saturday, May 20, from 3-5 p.m. and is geared to those who have experienced these difficulties, or anyone who simply wishes to learn how to compost.

Attendees at the workshop will learn to create rich, useful compost with a simpler method that makes "fixing" your pile possible and also shares how to get started for those new to it.

Volunteer workshop presenter Janet Lomastro's compost bin in Potsdam is the site of the workshop; the exact address will be shared with registered attendees. Ms. Lomastro has been perfecting her method of simplified traditional composting for more than 20 years.

She supplies her perennial gardens with the rich nutrients provided by home-made compost soil, made from kitchen scraps and yard waste, at no cost at all. A tour of Ms. Lomastro's impressive perennial garden landscape is included, showing the uses of home-made compost for edibles, ornamental plants and traditional medicinal herbs in the home garden.

Lomastro will share the simple science of compost, plus tips and tricks she has learned for how to create more compost with less work, so that attendees leave with a very clear understanding of how to run the simplest, high-performing compost pile with the least amount of effort involved.

This hands-on workshop is designed to simply and clearly solve the problems faced by many people who would like to be able to compost household waste instead of having to pay to dispose of it or let it rot in a pile outdoors, attracting nuisance wildlife.

Registration is limited, so attendees must reserve for this event which is limited to 12 adults, plus interested children.

There is a suggested donation of $22, $40 per couple, $10 student, to benefit the non-profit Local Living Venture organization, with a reduced rate or scholarships available upon request.

Contact 315-347-4223. or LocalLivingVenture@gmail.com with an email and phone number to RSVP for the exact location and what to wear/bring. If necessary, there will be a "wait list" for cancellations once the workshop fills up.
