POTSDAM -- The Community Performance Series is showing “Hairspray” Tuesday, July 23 through Saturday, July 27 in Snell Music Theater, SUNY Potsdam.

The show will run nightly at 7:30 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee Saturday.

"Hairspray" is a family-friendly musical, based on a 1988 film, with music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan.

The show opened on Broadway in 2002, and won eight Tony Awards before launching multiple national tours and a London West End production.

The musical was also adapted into a 2007 musical film starring John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfieffer and Queen Latifah.

Set in 1962 in Baltimore, "Hairspray" tells the tale of plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream to dance on the Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show.

When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show.

The Tony Award-winning musical was written by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, with music by Marc Shaiman and lyricists Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

The show will be directed by Donna Drake, who has starred on Broadway. She has received Emmy nominations for "Dear Alex" and "Annie," four Drama Desk Award nominations, a Mac Award nomination and a Theatre World Award.

Music director Sara Simon-Shult and sound designer Jim Wildman, both from Canton, will return. SUNY Potsdam’s Alexis Foster will serve as the costume designer. Annmarie Duggan will return as lighting designer. Sets will be designed by Kenneth Goldstein
