COLTON -- The Rod Thomas Memorial Higley Hustle Ski Race has been a foundation event of the Colton Winterfest since the fest’s inception and this year marks a new beginning for the race.
“Since the beginning, a fixture of the race and those who brought a spirit of enthusiastic support regardless of frigid temperatures were our starters and timers, Rod and Cheryl Thomas,” said event organizer Judy Fuhr. “Rod passed away suddenly this year. The group has decided to change the name of the event to honor him.”
This year the event moves from Sunday to Saturday, Jan. 30.
Higley Flow State Park is the venue for the event with a registration time of 9 a.m. and race time of 10 a.m. for adults, 11:30 a.m. for children.
The race is suitable for all ages and abilities. There will be a 5k classic race for adults and a 2.5k classic race for youth. There will be a $10 fee for adults and $5 for youth.
There will be refreshments provided after the event. Awards will be presented by age division and gender with first through third place being awarded.
The events are sponsored by the Friends of Higley Flow State Park. Proceeds will help offset annual grooming costs.
