Colton Tourism and Beautification Committee to light trees Sunday

COLTON -- The Colton Historical Society and the Town of Colton’s Tourism and Beautification Committee will greet winter Sunday, Dec. 6, with the lighting of the town’s tree at the town hall along with many remembrance trees in Colton and South Colton.

Remembrance trees are sponsored by individuals, families and others to honor loved ones.

As begun last year, the Tourism & Beautification Committee is sponsoring two trees. One of the trees to be located near the Museum on Main Street celebrating the Colton Fire Department’s 100th Anniversary will be decorated by the Fire Department.

The second, to be located in Three Falls Park in South Colton, will be ‘In Loving Memory of Evelyn Riehl’ who actively participated in committee activities and passed away in December 2014. The tree for Evelyn will be strung with purple lights; and the committee welcomes others who knew and/or respected her to help adorn the tree with non-electrical decorations and non-glass ornaments that reflect her love of nature and the many contributions she made to the community and larger area.

In recognition of recent world events another tree will be decorated by the Colton-Pierrepont Central School Foreign Language Club, paying homage to those whose lives were lost or forever changed by events in Paris on Nov. 13 and remembering this country is largely a nation of immigrants. And in remembrance of Bill Riehl (Evelyn’s son), who passed away before Thanksgiving, members of The Sunday Rock Legacy Project are decorating a tree in his honor.

The lighting countdown will start at 6:30 p.m. outside the Colton Museum on Main Street followed by the jingling of bells and singing led by members of the Colton Historical Society.

The lighting of trees at Three Falls Park at the corner of State Highway 56 and Sugar Bush Lane is set for 7 p.m.

In the community center the Colton Historical Society will read the names of those being remembered and will have refreshments available including cider and cookies.

At the Community Center the Tourism & Beautification Committee will have the last of the old holiday and winter-themed banners that once graced highway poles in town available to purchase for $10 each. The sale supports improvements in the Pavilion at Swift Field.

The popular Adirondack 102 Club passport and guide to the 102 towns and villages of the Adirondacks will be available for $20. Anyone interested in learning more about the banners and books can call Scott Muller at 315-244-9956.
