Colton Tourism & Beautification Committee taking orders for holiday remembrance trees through Oct. 16

COLTON -- With the arrival of autumn, the Town of Colton’s Tourism & Beautification Committee is taking orders for the Second Holiday Remembrance Tree Project, through Oct. 16.

Last year, the first year of the project, 30 lighted and decorated trees sponsored by individuals, families and groups were displayed in two locations in town from the beginning of December through the town’s Winterfest Weekend at the end of January. Twelve trees were located near the Colton Museum on Main Street in the hamlet of Colton and 18 were in Three Falls Park at the corner of State Highway 56 and Sugar Bush Lane in South Colton.

“The first year was such a success the committee is taking orders earlier in anticipation of even more interest,” said Dave Crosby, project coordinator. “It gives residents and others a way to honor families, remember loved ones or just add sparkle and warmth during the holidays. While each tree is decorated in meaningful ways, from a distance the variety of lights and decorations adds a great deal of charm to the community.”

The cost to order a five-foot tree and have it set up in the desired location with a power cord is still $33. The project description and order form are on the Town of Colton website, www.townofcolton.com, where it is available for downloading and printing. They are also available from the town clerk in Colton Town Hall on Main Street. Orders with payments must be mailed or otherwise delivered to the Town Hall by Friday, Oct. 16.

Ordered trees will be set up around Thanksgiving time, and the committee will identify each with a large laminated tag naming those remembered and the sponsors. Lights added by sponsors must be LEDs, in whatever color desired. Non-electrical decorations, garland, tinsel and non-glass ornaments also are allowed.

On Sunday, Dec. 6, the Colton Historical Society hosts its annual Winter Lights and Jingle Bells Event. The trees in both locations will be lit during the evening event, starting on Main Street near the Colton Museum and ending in Three Falls Park.

After the tree lighting and bell ringing in both locations, the names of all honored persons will be read at a reception in the town’s Community Center on Sugar Bush Lane in South Colton. More details about the event and reception will be available soon.

In the meantime anyone wishing to learn more about the Holiday Remembrance Tree Project should contact Dave Crosby (261-4300; dcrosby@twcny.rr.com). Updates also will be posted on the town’s website and Facebook page.
