POTSDAM -- Clarkson University's Digital Arts & Sciences program will host its 10th annual art exhibition of senior capstone projects May 8 and 9.

The opening reception of the art exhibition, "Generation," will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 8, in the Digital Arts Studios in the basement of Bertrand H. Snell Hall. The reception is free and refreshments will be served.

The exhibition will continue from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 9.

The exhibition features an interactive video art installation, book design and illustration, software application design and development, 3D digital animation, and web development.

"This is an extraordinary moment of affirmation when all that the students have learnt and experienced over the previous years of study crystalizes into a unique, idiosyncratic project derived solely on their own idea and ambitions," said Assistant Professor of Digital Arts Steven Pedersen. "Unlike most assignments from previous classes, each student takes full ownership of the direction and development of their project. With all the research, problem-solving, and tenacity involved in taking a project all the way from concept to realization, this is a transitional moment for them, as they move from perceiving themselves as students to full-fledged individuals ready for the professional world."

The innovative Digital Arts & Sciences program, which balances experimental and creative approaches to digital media with high-level courses in computer programming and mathematics, gives students the artistic insight and technical knowhow to navigate through the vast, creative possibilities afforded by digital technologies. This open-ended, holistic approach to digital media is reflected in the huge range of specializations within the exhibited capstone projects.

"I’m always amazed by the range and variety of work coming out of the Digital Arts and Sciences major," Pedersen said. "Each student has gone through the same program, yet the exhibited work encompasses a huge variety of creative approaches within the field of digital media. Whether you’re looking for the thrills of a 3D digital animation or you want a more contemplative, aesthetic experience as you admire the exhibited artwork, there’s something for everyone."
