Clarkson to host conference showcasing student work

POTSDAM -- Clarkson University's Department of Humanities and Social Sciences will host a conference on Thursday, April 19, showcasing the creative and critical intellectual work of students.

Presentations focus on themes of local and global significance, such as gender, environmentalism, culture, art, politics, diversity, scientific engagement, and literature.

Events are free and will take place in the new Student Center multipurpose rooms. The public is invited.

Keynote address will be at 4 p.m. with "Global Palestine: Thinking Beyond Conflict" presented by St. Lawrence University Chair of Global Studies Prof. John Collins.

Collins is author of Occupied By Memory: The Intifada Generation and The Palestinian State of Emergency, and is coeditor, with Ross Glover, of Collateral Language: A User's Guide to America's New War. His articles and reviews have appeared in the Journal of Palestine Studies, Social Text, Globalizations, and Middle East Report, among other ublications. He holds a Ph.D. in comparative studies in discourse andsociety from the University of Minnesota, where he was a MacArthur Scholar.

Sessions with presentations will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a noon-1 p.m. lunch.

Topics include:

• 9:30-10:50 a.m.: Epistemological Games: from Gender Constructs to Infinity; Crossing Borders: Gender, Translation, and Immigration; and The WWII Combined Bombing Campaign in Hindsight: The U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey & Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-5.

• 11 a.m.-noon: Media, Sexuality, and Identity; Creative Writing and Poetry Readings; and Healthcare Policy & Reform: A Cross-border Analysis.

• 1:15-3:30 p.m.: War & Society: From the Hoplites to the Present; Films: Social Documentation; and Active Research.
