POTSDAM -- The Crane School of Music Faculty Recital Series will continue Monday, Oct. 15, with a concert featuring clarinetist Julianne Kirk Doyle with guests, at 7:30 p.m. in Snell Theater, SUNY Potsdam.

Julianne Kirk Doyle, an assistant professor of clarinet, will open the recital alongside Crane School of Music Dean Dr. Michael Sitton. They will present "Tema et Variazioni" by Jean Françaix, which the composer wrote for an exam at the National Superior Conservatory of Music in Paris in 1930, when a professor instructed him to write a piece for piano and clarinet with "arduous sequences and up in the high pitch range."

Then Doyle and Sitton will perform the Sonata Op. 128 by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Rosario Mazzeo called the composition's melodies "beautiful direct utterances of compelling attraction," adding that the "experience of hearing the work is a realization that it is one of the most agreeable of the clarinet sonata literature, indeed one which will have a permanent place in the repertoire."

Following a brief intermission, Doyle will be joined by Anna Hendrickson on oboe, Carol Lowe on bassoon, Kelly Drifmeyer on horn and Gary Busch on piano, for a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's Quintet Op. 15. This remarkable work was inspired by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Quintet for Piano and Winds in E-Flat Major.

Doyle serves as assistant professor of clarinet at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music, where she is also director of the Crane Youth Music Camp. An active soloist and chamber musician, she is a member of the Aria Reed Trio and the Eastman Triana; both ensembles have performed on the WXXI Rochester's Live at Hochstein radio broadcast.

Doyle is co-director of the Crane Clarinet Choir and Crane Clarinet Ensembles, and has given masterclasses and clinics for the Southeast Asian Youth Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, the Aria Summer Music Academy and the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.

She also co-coordinates the acclaimed Potsdam Clarinet Summit, formerly the Single Reed Summit.

She has performed with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, Amici Orchestra, the Orchestra of Northern New York, the Northern Symphonic Winds, Light Opera Oklahoma, the Eastman Wind Ensemble, Philharmonia and Opera, the Tulsa Philharmonic and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.

Doyle has also performed and presented at numerous conferences including the International Clarinet Association Clarinetfest, International Double Reed Society Conference, New York State School Music Association Conference, New York State Band Directors Association, Mid-America Center for Contemporary Music and the Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium and at the Midwest Clinic with the Aria Reed Trio.

Prior to joining the faculty at Crane, she held teaching positions at Ball State University, the University of Rochester, the Eastman School of Music, the Eastman Community Music School, the Hochstein School of Music, Nazareth College and the University of Oklahoma.

She holds a doctorate of musical arts and master of music degrees in performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music and a bachelor's of music from the University of Oklahoma.
