Potsdam Museum Director Mimi Van Deusen with Civil War soldier William Elderkin’s trunk, which travelled with him across the country.
POTSDAM — The Public Museum, 2 Park St., will host a Civil War round table Sunday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m.
Jan Wojick will present the story of a trunk belonging to William A. Elderkin, a West Point graduate who married Fanny Gurley at the start of the War.
Her father was from Parishville, and was President Lincoln's spiritual advisor. President Lincoln helped to plan the wedding and stood up for the bride as her father, a minister, performed the ceremony.
Elderkin, a graduate of West Point, was married in the White House, and fought in the battle of First Bull Run.
The event is free and open to the public.
Refreshments will be served.
