POTSDAM -- A 2016 British and Swedish film detailing the story of a female script writer for World War II propaganda films will be the next featured movie of the Cinema 10 film series at the Roxy Theater Oct. 2.
“Their Finest,” directed by Lone Scherfig, tells the story of Catrin Cole, portrayed by Gemma Arterton, who is recruited by the British Ministry of Information during the London Blitz to contribute “a woman’s touch” to scripts for propaganda films.
She sets out to make a film about two women who purportedly piloted a boat during the evacuation of Dunkirk. She teams up with the lead screenwriter and a vain leading man has-been to make a film that will “warm the hearts of a nation.”
The trio contends with sexism, jealous relatives and government interference as they work to create something meaningful.
“At its best, which is often, Their Finest manipulates appearance and reality, relief and recognition, with exquisite finesse. As befits a film about making a film,” writes Peter Keough of the Boston Globe.
The film also stars Sam Calflin and Bill Nighy.
The movie is based on the novel by Lissa Evans.
The 117 minute film is rated R for language and a scene of sexuality.
