Children’s car seat safety check to be held in Massena Monday

MASSENA – A children’s car seat safety check is set for Monday, Sept. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Massena Fire Department, 34 Andrews St.

The St. Lawrence County Traffic Safety Program want people to know that:

• It is five times safer for infants under age 2 to ride in a rear-facing car seat than it is to ride in a seat that faces forward

• Up to age 4, per New York State law, children should remain in a car seat with a full harness

• Safety experts recommend that children up to the age of 13 travel in the back seat of motor vehicles

• The fit of booster seats is important in keeping your child safe.

The seat check is sponsored by the North Country Child Safety Coalition, with members from the Massena Police Dept., Seaway Valley Ambulance, the New York State Police, and the county Traffic Safety Program.

This is a drop-in check, and there is no cost. Those who attend should bring car seat instructions and vehicle owner's manual if they have them.

If you are unable to attend the seat check, you can check www.safeny.ny.gov to find out information about New York State Laws and safest practices, or for the parent or caregiver to access information about car seat safety.
