CANTON -- The Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton will recognize Heather Sullivan-Catlin when it presents her with the Rachel Somers Grant Social Action Award at the Sunday morning service Sunday, June 14.

The award honors people who work to make a more humane and progressive community.

Heather Sullivan-Catlin carries on Grant’s legacy of making a difference in our community, church officials said in a prepared statement. A professor of sociology at SUNY Potsdam, she focuses her teaching and scholarship on issues of hunger, poverty, and inequality, and extends beyond the classroom to be “part of a long tradition of applying sociology to community issues.” A former board member and president of GardenShare, she was also involved in Seedcorn, served as president of Citizens for Responsible Growth, and is a leader of the North Country 350 Alliance.

Rachel Somers Grant was a member of the UU church, a teacher, and an activist who lived in Canton from 1977 until her death in 1990. She was involved in a wide variety of community activities; her efforts garnered the respect of supporters and opponents alike. The award presented annually in her name by the church’s Social Action Committee celebrates the call for social justice that was central to Rachel Somers Grant’s volunteerism.

North Country friends and neighbors are welcome to join in celebrating Heather’s contributions June 14 at 10:30 a.m. The Unitarian Universalist Church, 3½ East Main St., across from the park. For directions visit www.uucantonny.org.
