CANTON – The community is invited to join in during two days of volunteer service on Make a Difference Days, Friday, Oct. 28, sponsored by the Newman Center and Saturday, Oct. 29, sponsored by Canton Central School.

Also involved in planning and participating are SUNY Canton, St. Lawrence University and the Canton Chamber of Commerce. These days will find high school and college students, alumni, business owners, and community members working side-by-side to improve the village of Canton.

Some of the service activities planned for Make a Difference Days include yardwork and maintenance for elderly homeowners, maintenance on the school playgrounds, clean up at Village parks, litter and weeds in parking lots and other clean up activities at public sites in the village.

Volunteers are needed for hourly shifts between the hours of noon and 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Community members interested in becoming involved should show up at the Newman Center office, Court Street, on Friday, and for Saturday, sign up will be in the front entrance of the high school.

Volunteers will be assigned at the time to projects that need additional people. Anyone interested in bringing a large group to volunteer should call Tom Phalon at the Newman Center in advance at 386-8425 for Friday and Viola Schmid-Doyle at Canton Central at 386-8561 for Saturday.

Businesses may also wish to donate rakes, paper leaf bags, work gloves, or refreshments to the volunteer crews. Volunteers are encouraged to bring tools.

Anyone wishing to make a donation should contact the Newman Center at the number above.

You can also contact the Canton Chamber at 386-8255.

Any elderly person needing work done at their home or if you know of someone that does, contact the Newman Center.
