CANTON -- A two- part tree-planting event to celebrate Arbor Day, sponsored by the Village of Canton and the Canton Tree Committee, will be held on Fridays, April 20 and 27 at Canton Island Park on the lower half of Willow Island.

Part one is a working event beginning at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers are invited to help move trees into pre-dug holes. Bring work gloves, sturdy shoes, a shovel or rake.

Part two is a ceremony which will occur on Arbor Day, April 27 at noon, including an Arbor Day proclamation by Mayor Dave Curry and recognition of the donors of the new trees.

The Tree Committee is working with the Village of Canton DPW. DPW staff have removed dead trees and will be digging the holes for the new trees.

A total of 14 trees will be planted. The purchase of the trees was made possible through donations by George Gibson (12 trees) in honor of Judy Gibson and Gibson family members and Becky and Peter Van de Water; Philip Wade and the family of Donald Peckham in honor of Donald Peckham; and Friends of Norma Lawrence at the Canton Village and Town offices in honor of Norma Lawrence.

The Canton Island Park on Willow Island is in need of additional trees to replace ash trees which are in danger of infection by the Emerald Ash Borer.

Arbor Day is an annual observance that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. It reflects a hope for the future since trees are one of our most valuable resources. They help clean the air of pollutants, fight the greenhouse effect and conserve energy by shading and cooling homes and buildings. Trees shade our streets and sidewalks and reduce storm water runoff and flooding potential. Did you know street trees reduce speeding and increase the safety of pedestrians and cyclists? They protect you from rain, sun and heat - truly a great investment for every community!

The Tree Committee has also been working to obtain Tree City, USA status for the Village of Canton. A “Tree City USA” sign at a community’s entrance tells visitors that the community cares about its environment. The designation will enhance Cantonʼs chances of obtaining grants and resource allocations for tree planting projects.

The Tree Committee fund-raises for plantings through the memory tree program. A tree can be donated to celebrate an occasion, such as a birthday, wedding, retirement, birth of a child, or anniversary. It could also be donated in memory of a loved oneʼs passing. If you are interested in donating a memory tree, please contact Joette Holgado, 379-1642 for more information.
