CANTON -- A week dedicated to showcasing student and faculty research and art will be held this month at SUNY Canton.

The annual Scholarly Activities Celebration will kick off at 4 p.m. Monday, April 16, with a special musical performance by Canadian vocalist Aviva Chernick and guitarist Joel Schwartz in the Southworth Library Learning Commons Cyber Café.

Chernick is the lead singer of the Juno Award-nominated group, Jaffa Road. She has performed extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada, including the Ottawa International Jazz Festival and the Atlanta Jewish Music Festival. A multilingual artist, Chernick performs an original combination of world music sung in Hebrew, Ladino, English and French.

Following the performance, Glen Greenberg, president of the Long Island-based company Elmont Glass, will speak in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center’s Kingston Theater at 5:30 p.m. Greenberg is a 1977 SUNY Canton alumnus and has overseen installation projects for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and JFK International Airport. Elmont Glass clients also include Microsoft, Samsung, Sony, Lockheed Martin and NBC.

Students and faculty will display their research projects from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in Southworth Library, followed by oral presentations from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Cook Hall, Rooms 200 and 201. Research topics include water inaccessibility on Native American Tribal Lands, techniques used to solve serial murder cases and biomimicry.

The Environmental Change Organization student club will hold a dedication ceremony for the campus pollinator garden at noon Thursday, April 19, adjacent to French Hall (rain date is 2 p.m. April 20). The garden, which was made possible by a campus grant from the Canton College Foundation, provides a habitat for bees, butterflies and other pollinators. It is maintained by students and staff and is a centerpiece of the college’s commitment to sustainability.

To cap off the week, the Graphic and Multimedia Design program will host a student art exhibition from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in Southworth Library. Included works will represent a variety of media including photography, illustration, graphic design, and graphic novels.

All events are free and open to the public.
