POTSDAM -- Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s Diabetes Support Group will meet on Thursday, April 24, from 11 a.m. to noon in Conference Room A on second floor of the Hospital’s main campus at 50 Leroy St.
Guest speaker Elizabeth Isenberg, Registered Dietician, will present on the topic "Eating Well to Protect Your Brain."
“With recent evidence suggesting that increased glucose levels can impair brain function, maintaining good glycemic control has never been more important,” said CPH’s Diabetic Educator Katherine Calcagno, RN.
Diabetes is a metabolic disease affecting nearly 26 million children and adults in the US. Without proper management, diabetes can lead to kidney disease, blindness, heart disease, and amputation of lower limbs. It has been estimated that 27% of seniors over the age of 65 have diabetes and those at greater risk include individuals with family history, those who are overweight, or those of African ethnicity.
“The luncheon will focus on the role of nutrition in preserving mental acuity and how eating better can assist in the ability to grow old gracefully,” Calcagno said.
