CANTON -- The Deep Root Center for Self-Directed Learning is holding five weeks of themed workshops in July and August. They are for children between ages 7 and 15, space is limited.
Theater educator Karen Wells will lead a kids theater workshop from July 21 to 25 and August 11 to 15. She will introduce performance techniques and behind-the-scenes artistry, including design and set creation and scenery and as props management. Participants will craft a performance at the end of each week.
West African drum and dance instructor Len Macke, will offer African drumming and dance from July 28 to Aug. 1. Children of all ages are invited to participate. The students will perform to cap off the week.
Aug. 4 to 8 is "All Things Food." Two days will be spent on a farm at littleGrasse Foodworks. Paula Youmell from Hands On Health will give food and nutrition classes on Aug. 4. Aug. 7 and 8 will be cooking lessons and practical applications of lessons learned on the previous days.
Aug. 18 to 22 is "Grab-Bag," with each day featuring a different theme and instructor. Themes will include photography, music and sound and origami.
