CANTON -- Canton Central School Thespians will present the musical “The Sound of Music” on Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6 at 7 p.m. in the Hugh C. Williams High School Auditorium.

There will also be a matinee on Saturday, April 6 at 2 p.m.

Tickets will be available in the high school main office before the show or may be purchased at the door. The cost is $10 for adults, and $7 for students and senior citizens.

The story takes place in 1930s Austria on the brink of World War II on the eve of the Anschluss, and tells the story of Maria Rainer (Lizzy Davis), a young, free-spirited postulant at Nonnberg Abbey, who is sent by the Mother Abbess (Riley O’Shea) to serve as a governess for the seven children (Grace Franklin, Gabe Schmid-Doyle, Abby Metcalf, Joel Allen, Chloe O’Shea, Finley Thomas, and Olivia Sommerstein) of Captain von Trapp (Alexander Scriminger), who serves in the Navy.

Maria soon finds that, after his wife’s death, the Captain has brought the strict lifestyle of the Navy to his household, using a whistle to call on the members of the household and eliminating music from his life and those of his children. As Maria brings music and joy back into the von Trapps’ lives, she and the Captain begin to develop feelings for each other.

Meanwhile, the Captain is in a committed, yet emotionally detached relationship with Elsa Schraeder (Abby Kerrigan), the wealthy president of a corporation. However, after Elsa and the Captain’s friend, Max Detweiler (Margaret Doty), pressure him to go against his principles, tension builds in his relationship with her.

This musical is a heart-warming story about love and family, and the importance of following your dreams and doing what is right in the face of danger.
