CANTON -- A free bird-focused habitat management workshop will be held Saturday, May 2, at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Learning Barn, 2043B State Highway 68.

Registration and refreshments will be held at 8:30 a.m. The workshop is from 9 a.m. to noon followed by lunch and visits to habitat demonstration sites from noon to 2:30 p.m. Free refreshments and lunch will be provided.

Participants will learn about bird and wildlife-friendly management techniques for their property that benefit shrub land, young forest, and mature forest birds, such as Golden-winged Warblers and Wood Thrushes.

Participating landowners will hear from a series of presenters about wildlife they can attract through proper habitat management, the basics of Golden-winged Warbler habitat, and where they can find resources, tools and potential partners to help them plan for managing habitat to benefit wildlife on their property. Presentations will be made by Audubon New York, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Clarkson and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

The presentations will be followed by visits to habitat demonstration site in the afternoon to see quality early successional and mature forest habitat and learn about restoring habitat to meet the needs of declining bird species dependent on these habitat types. Bird migration is underway, so participants should bring binoculars to get a little birding in while out visiting habitat sites.

Register by Wednesday, April 29, by contacting Linnea Rowse at lrowse@audubon.org or 782-7289 ext.112.
