POTSDAM -- Claire Burkum, a biology instructor at St. Lawrence University, leads a “fungi-focused” walk along the red Sandstone Trail Friday, Aug. 15 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
They will meet at the north entrance off the Back Hannawa Road. It is two miles south from where Clarkson Avenue, which becomes the Back Hannawa Road, begins at Maple Street. The parking area will be on the left.
There will be discussion of major characteristics used to identify fungal fruiting bodies including mushrooms, shelf and bracket fungi, coral fungi and others. They will also talk about the various roles fungi play in a forest ecosystem and some ways humans use fungi.
Nature Up North organizers suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes. People may also want to bring a hand lens (magnifying glass) and some bug spray.
