CANTON -- The Phantoms in the Park event will bring ghouls, ghosts, goblins, witches, wizards, robots, superheroes, and monsters of all shapes, sizes and ages to the village park Oct. 28 starting at 1 p.m.

The event, co-sponored and organized by the Canton Chamber of Commerce, St. Lawrence University and SUNY Canton, will feature a Halloween parade, costume contest and trick-or-treating at area businesses at their storefronts or in the park.

“For us, we hear from a lot of people that this is the younger kids’ trick-or -treat. This is their Halloween,” chamber director Sally Hill said. Everything at the event is free of charge, said Hill, and several hundred children are expected again this year.

Children and parents from many neighboring communities attend as well as trick-or-treaters from Canton, said the director.

“And, by the time they leave, they have enough candy to have a really big belly ache,” Hill quipped.

Hill said there will be all kinds of Halloween games and other activities like pumpkin decorating and other events. Both colleges set up a variety of contests for the children as well. She said the colleges are a “big help” with organizing the event.

The park will be decorated in pumpkins, gourds and corn stalks donated from the community.

Spooky music will played during the event as well, she said.

Prizes will be given out during the costume contest, said Hill.

Categories this year include Scariest, Most Original, Funniest, Most Patriotic, Cutest, Most Creative Use of Recycled Materials, and “Families of Phantoms,” which presents a prize to a family dressed in the best costume.

The trick or treat parade will begin after the costume contest.

Businesses who are outside the downtown trick or treat route who would like hand out candy and be part of the festivities are welcome to set up in the park, Hill said.

To be included on the trick or treat parade route, businesses should call the chamber office at 315-386-8255.

Kinney Drugs is offering a 10 percent discount on candy to businesses who participate.
