CANTON -- TAUNY will host a benefit concert by singer and multi-instrumentalist Lee Knight to celebrate its Winterfest re-opening Friday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.

The concert will feature guitar, fretless banjo, dulcimer, Cherokee flute, and mouth bow, and will be held in the newly renovated upstairs classroom space.

Knight, a North Country native who now makes his home in North Carolina, has performed throughout the U.S. and internationally. As a traditional banjo and mouth bow player, he has collaborated with renowned Chinese flute player Wu Man, performing with the Wu Man trio in Carnegie Hall. Knight has also been a researcher and collector of traditional songs and stories of the Adirondacks and the Appalachians since his teenage years.

He is a partner in TAUNY’s current project to publish and promote the Adirondack folk song collection of Marjorie Lansing Porter, who recorded hundreds of Adirondack songs and ballads in lumber and mining camps during the 1940s and ‘50s. A friend and mentee of Porter, Knight will perform songs he learned from her collection, as well as folk songs of the Appalachians. He will also answer questions and tell the stories behind the songs during this interactive, informal concert.

Refreshments will be available.

A suggested donation of $5 to $10 will benefit TAUNY.

Concert-goers will also have the chance to preview the new visiting exhibit in TAUNY’s gallery. Artists of the Forest features traditional artists from the Northern Forest Region in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and northern New York. Curated by Kathleen Mundell of Cultural Resources in Maine in collaboration with TAUNY and the Vermont Folklife Center, Artists of the Forest is on tour throughout the Northeast.
