CANTON — The Local Living Venture workshop "Beer Brewing 101: Let’s Get Started" is designed for beer enthusiasts who want to start making great beer at home. It will be held near Canton Wednesday, Jan. 10, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

At this first session in a series, presenters Loren Fountaine and Mike Zagrobelny will guide participants with basic brewing knowledge and give them the confidence to brew beer successfully at home. Included in the workshop is a tour of a top-notch home brewing set up and brewers are welcome to bring samples to share.

There is no prior knowledge necessary. Topics include basic brewing equipment, where to buy needed items, basic brewing vocabulary, and the process for stove top extract brewing. This basic course will be followed in the Spring by a hands-on session.

If there is a popular demand, the Local Living Venture hopes to facilitate an ongoing gathering of interested brewers, with the benefits of sharing tips, recipes and perhaps a cooperative buying club.

Workshop presenter Loren Fountaine is a North Country native and lives in Massena with his wife and two children. He has brewed hundreds of gallons of beer since the early 2000's and now has an entire room of his home dedicated to brewing, having upgraded to an automated recirculating mash system in 2014.

Co-presenter Mike Zagrobelny lives in Norwood with his wife, three children, and the family dog and has been brewing for the past three years. Home brewing satisfies his love of good beer and thrifty nature of getting something good for less, especially when he gets to reuse and re-purpose old machinery in the bargain.

The fee is $22 per person, $40 per couple/family of two, $10 for students. All attendees must be over the age of 21.

Reservations are necessary to receive the location. Register at LocalLivingVenture@gmail.com or 315-347-4223.
