CANTON -- In addition to four current art exhibitions, the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University will host David Sommerstein, a.k.a. DJ Tapatío from North Country Public Radio’s The Beat Authority, for “Beats in the Gallery: It Ain’t No Joke” from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 1.

The event is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.

The fun and funky musical get-together is being presented in conjunction with four exhibitions at the gallery, focused on street art and specifically street art stickers. In the main galleries, “Re-Writing the Streets: The International Language of Stickers,” co-curated by Catherine Tedford, director of the Brush Art Gallery, and Oliver Baudach, director of the Hatch Kingdom Sticker Museum in Berlin, Germany. The exhibition features more than 800 stickers focused on tagging, character design, culture jamming, and socio-political issues, such as civil liberties and the environment. Additional stickers are arranged by artist, geographic location, and subject, including robots, zombies, food, animals, insects, and other imaginative designs.

Also in the main galleries, “Paper Bullets: 100 Years of Political Stickers from around the World” presents early 20th-century examples of “silent agitators” created by the Industrial Workers of the World as well as World War II- and Vietnam War-era propaganda, along with more contemporary stickers from Canada, Egypt, England, Germany, Indonesia, Spain, Ukraine and the United States.

In addition, “Post 9/11 to Occupy Wall Street to Present Day: A Street Art Installation” by Meg Chandler ’17 and “Urban Art from the Permanent Collection” are also on display. The four exhibitions close on Tuesday, April 18.

Sommerstein will be spinning hip hop street beats from across the globe, from Chile to Beirut, Senegal to Istanbul.
