POTSDAM -- The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team will wear its pink jerseys next Tuesday, Feb. 17 against SUNY Plattsburgh, as the Bears host Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Play 4Kay Pink Game to raise funds to fight cancer.
The Bears will continue the event through the weekend as Potsdam takes on SUNY Geneseo Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. and College of Brockport Saturday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m.
The national event, hosted by the Bears and many other college teams, will help raise money and awareness for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund from Feb. 13-23. The fund partners with the V Foundation, raising money for scientific research to fight women's cancers.
The athletic department will sell pink t-shirts for a $10 donation at the main gym entrance starting after halftime of the men's game and will continue through the weekend. All proceeds from the games' ticket and t-shirts sales will go to the Kay Yow Fund. Both games will also feature a 50/50 raffle and fans can enter a halftime shootout with prizes for a $1 donation
"We're excited to participate in this event again," said Bears Head Coach Tara Ruckh. "Cancer touches so many lives and we just want to do our part in making a difference in someone's life."
The late Kay Yow, former NC State University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for Play 4Kay after her third recurrence with breast cancer in 2006. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and died on Jan. 24, 2009. The initiative has raised over $3.9 million to date.
