CANTON — The Bagley Basketball Classic matchup between Edwards-Knox and Madrid-Waddington High School boy’s basketball teams will be Saturday, Jan. 21, at 4 p.m. at SUNY Canton’s Roos House.
This annual tournament is dedicated to the memory of Rachael and Leon Bagley, who grew up in the North Country, Rachael in Edwards and Leon in Madrid. After school, Leon joined the military in World War II. Leon came back to the North Country to attend what was then Canton ATI on the GI Bill and joined General Electric in Schenectady after graduation.
There he met Rachael, who was also working at GE. They married in 1955 and had five children.
In 2000, they established the Rachael M. and Leon E. Bagley Endowed Scholarship with the Canton College Foundation at SUNY Canton, which is administered by their son, T.J. Bagley.
T.J. Bagley says the games are designed to raise awareness of the scholarship program at the two public schools, showcase the new Roos House at SUNY Canton, to raise some money for the fund, and to present the scholarship winners.
Admission is free.
All donations go to the Rachael M. and Leon E. Bagley Scholarship Fund at SUNY Canton.
