Author David Means to speak in Canton on Thursday

CANTON -- The St. Lawrence University Writer’s Series will kick off its 2014-15 season with author David Means on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Sykes common room, across from the Brewer Bookstore.

The author of four collections of fiction, Means has published stories in The New Yorker, Esquire, Harper’s and The Paris Review. Two of those were included in Best American Short Story collections.

Means short story collections include The Spot (2010), The Secret Goldfish (2004), Assorted Fire Events (2000), and A Quick Kiss of Redemption (1991). He is the recipient of the O. Henry Prize in 2011 for “The Junction” and 2006 for “Sault Ste. Marie,” among others.

A member of the English faculty at Vassar College, Means teaches creative writing, modern and contemporary literature and American culture. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1984 from the College of Wooster and went to graduate school at Columbia University, where he received an MFA in poetry.
