CHIPPEWA BAY -- The Chippewa Bay Poker Run will go toward new kayak launch sites in the Chippewa Bay-Hammond area, with anything extra going to a fund to help local families in need.

On Aug. 20, paddlers both beginners and experienced will climb into vessels and venture out in Chippewa Bay.

Over 100 kayakers raised their paddles last year.

“There is a serenity and camaraderie that exists when you’re with a group of people on the water,” according to event organizer Erica Demick. “We have a special niche in Chippewa Bay that so many deserve and have yet to experience. Participants both young and old, from near and far, get to meet new people, experience our sanctuary of the Thousand Islands, and most importantly, give back to our community in tangible ways.”

The poker run style event will be from 8 a.m. to noon, rain or shine, at Schermerhorn Harbor, with checkpoints at islands in Chippewa Bay.

An awards ceremony will follow the poker run at Foster’s Harbor Inn.

Grand prizes for the top three poker hands (adult and minor divisions) will be distributed.

People can enter to win prizes from local businesses, including an overnight stay at Historic Singer Castle’s Royal Suite, a handcrafted mahogany screen door, and a weekend getaway at the Lodges at Oak Point for up to six people. Kids prizes include a youth stand up paddleboard, remote control boat and an inner-tube filled with river goodies. The after-event will also include door prizes, a raffle, live entertainment by Chippewa Breeze, food and drinks.

Event organizers suggest online registration by Aug. 5 at VisitHammondNY.com.

Those signed up in advance receive $5 off admission an event T-shirt. Registration is still available afterward, as well as on event day starting at 8 a.m. for $35 adults and $25 kids.
