GOUVERNEUR -- Audubon New York will host a free workshop and habitat visits to learn how to successfully manage properties to maximize benefits for birds and other wildlife, especially the golden-winged warbler, a highly threatened species in the United States.

It is scheduled for June 25 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Gouverneur Public Library, 60 Church St.

The golden-winged warbler has experienced one of the steepest declines of any North American songbird and is now listed as a threatened species in Canada, with a pending petition for listing as an Endangered Species in the U.S., according to Audubon New York.

By working with private landowners and organizational partners, the group says they aim to restore and maintain critical habitat for the warbler and other forest, shrubland and game birds.

The workshop will offer participants the chance to learn successful strategies and techniques for maintaining high-quality habitat on their land to support the needs of birds and other wildlife.

The workshops bring landowners together with experts on birds, other wildlife and habitat management. Participating landowners will hear from a series of presenters about birds and other wildlife they can attract through proper habitat management, the basics of golden-winged warbler habitat, and where they can find the resources, tools and potential partners to help them plan for managing habitat to benefit wildlife on their property. Presentations will be made by Audubon New York, state DEC, and a local land owners.

The group will visit a demonstration habitat site owned by Indian River Lakes Conservancy.

Because this event is being held during the bird breeding season, participants may be able to hear and see the different species attracted to early succesional forest habitat.

The event is free but sign-ups required. Deadline is June 24.

Sign up: lrowse@audubon.org or 782-7289 ext 112.

People should plan to arrive at 8:30 a.m. for registration and refreshments.

The workshop goes from 9 a.m. to noon followed by a woods walk from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

A free pizza lunch will be provided.
