CANTON -- The 11th annual Remington Arts Festival takes place downtown Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 20-23 to celebrate North Country arts and the life of Frederic Remington, Canton’s native son.

Highlights will include local artists, live music, a 5k run and horse-drawn carriage rides.

The festival is presented by the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY), and the St. Lawrence County Arts Council.

Most events take place Saturday, when local wood carver Jack Taylor and ballad singer Colleen Cleveland will be featured. Taylor will show his work on the village green from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, with carving demonstrations at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Cleveland will offer an interactive demonstration at 1:30 p.m., followed by a concert at 4 p.m., both at the Unitarian Universalist Church.

Horse-drawn carriage tours of Canton will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the village green.

TAUNY will feature a new Letterboxing Trail. Letterboxing involves searching for hand-carved stamps from clues. Participants can learn more about letterboxing and get clues at The TAUNY Center, 53 Main St., or at the TAUNY tent on the village green.

Children’s games will be available in the front yard of the Silas Wright House, 3 E. Main St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Arts Council will host a free Art Show in the Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the village green park and inside the Unitarian Universalist Church, 3? Main St. Over 20 local artisans will show and sell their work, including pottery, jewelry, fiber arts and visual arts.

Several new artists will join the festival this year, including K. Chad Graham and Brent Carbino of Tucker Spring Organics, who make handcrafted soaps; Jamie Dalton of J. Dalton Designs whose jewelry combines crocheted wire and semi-precious stones; Jahn Grey Hawk who crafts Native American clothing; and local author Margaret Hockett.

Returning artists include Tom and Donna Amoroso of The Leather Artisan, silversmith Mary Ann McLaughlin, watercolor painter and stoneware potter Leon LeBeau, and Mary Holland of MaryGwyneth LLC with her wearable art, along with a number of other artists and craftspeople.

If the weather turns to rain, booths will be located in the Unitarian Universalist Church.

A student art competition exhibit will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Grasse River Heritage Room, Rushton Place, at Riverside and Main Streets.

Sunday, a 5k fun run/walk takes place at 8:45 a.m. The race will start at Frederic Remington’s grave in Evergreen Cemetery, runs through the St. Lawrence University campus and the village, and finishes at Remington’s birth home on Court Street. Registration is $10, with a T-shirt to the first 60 registrants. Refreshments and transportation back to the start are included.

The festival kicks off Thursday at the historical association, with a brown bag lunch presentation by Sue Longshore titled ìVanished Arizona:  Frederic Remington and Martha Summerhayes.î An exhibit by the same name will be on view Friday from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Longshore is the collections manager of the association. Museum admission is free.
