CANTON – The annual Remington Arts Festival takes place Sept. 25-28 featuring a birthday celebration, art show and sale, horse-drawn carriage tours of the village and a 5K walk/run.

A birthday celebration of Frederic Remington’s 153rd birthday will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the TAUNY Center, 53 Main St., from 7 to 9 p.m.

“We will sing happy birthday to Mr. Remington and Todd Moe and Shelly Pike will be dressed as Fred and Eva (Fredric’s wife),” said event coordinator Lenore VanderZee.

There will be hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and a sneak peak of works from the young artists in the Student Art competition. The student art competition and exhibit will take place at TAUNY from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

A juried art show and sale is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Village Green Park.

“The show is juried and all artists are local,” she said.

Artists and artisans will display and sell pottery, fabric art, jewelry, paintings and more. The event is presented by the St. Lawrence County Arts Council.

Free horse-drawn carriage tours of the village on Saturday will feature actors dressed in period costumes who will give presentations about historic sites.

“New this year the North Country Children’s Museum Without Walls will host art based activities along with the Kids Space from the Frederic Remington Museum,” VanderZee said.

Nature’s Storehouse will offer free henna tattoos, VanderZee said.

The Frederic Remington Exhibit will be open from noon to 8 p.m. at the Silas Wright House, 3 ½ East Main St. on Saturday.

Throughout the day musicians will entertain in the park and there will be children can experience Remington’s childhood through games and try on costumes typical of this historical period.

The Remington 5k Fun Run/Walk will begin Sunday at Remington’s gravesite at Evergreen Cemetery at 8:45 a.m. and ends at the home in which Remington was born. Participants will pass through significant historical sites along the course including on SLU’s campus where Frederick and his wife shared their first kiss, VanderZee said.

Walkers and runners are welcome. Register on the day of the race starting at 8 a.m. Transportation will be available to bring people back to starting point at the cemetery. There is no charge.

“The event would not be possible without the support of town and village officials as well as all the local individuals and businesses,” VanderZee said.
