BRASHER FALLS -- Youngsters can try Saturday for a chance to play flag football with NFL standouts visiting St. Lawrence County for the Hometown Heroes Muskie Challenge and Riverfest.

A Punt, Pass and Kick contest begins at 6 p.m. at the Tri-Town Arena for kids 14 and under. The top five winners in each of four divisions – eight years old and younger, ages nine and 10, ages 11 and 12, and ages 13 and 14 – will receive NFL jerseys and move on to participate in a flag football game with former Oakland Raider Eddie Kidd, San Francisco 49’er Sam Kennedy, and Tampa Bay Buccaneer Monte Spencer.

Pre-registration for the Punt, Pass and Kick contest is encouraged; call Ron Villnave at 389-4786 or 296-3141. Participation is free but families who are entering children are asked to bring donations of non-perishable food items for a local food drive. The public is also encouraged to come out and watch the contest and the game that will follow immediately after.

The football pros – and avid fishermen – will be in and around Brasher Falls all day Saturday, along with more than 30 Fort Drum soldiers participating with local volunteer guides in the first annual Hometown Heroes Muskie Challenge for Wounded Warriors and their battle buddies, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the St. Regis River.

Free to the public all Saturday are activities being offered throughout Brasher Falls as part of the catch-and-release fishing contest and Riverfest, including a kids’ fishing hole, “bouncy house” and water slide, horse-drawn wagon rides, mini-golf, and a wine tasting at Spirits of Downtown.

Visit the Tri-Town Chamber of Commerce web site for more information: www.tritownchamberofcommerce.com.

The Hometown Heroes Muskie Challenge is supported by the Town of Brasher, FISHCAP, North Country Savings Bank, North Lawrence VFW, Brasher Falls Bed & Breakfast and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, which has waived fishing license requirements for veterans and active duty members of the United States Armed Forces participating in the event.

Other sponsors include the American Legion in Winthrop, Riverview Restaurant in Brasher, Elliott’s Agway in Winthrop, Steve's RV Center of Potsdam, Backwoods Taxidermy of Potsdam, River Rat Design of Ogdensburg, Wounded Warrior Outdoor Adventures, Inc., Mepps, Rocky Mountain Sports, Yellow Bird Products, Vicious Fishing, Flipin The Bird, Super Frog Hook, US Reel, and Subway in Canton.
