Arbor Day ceremony planned for April 30 in Canton

CANTON -- The Village of Canton and the Canton Tree Committee will host an Arbor Day recognition ceremony Tuesday, April 30 at 12:30 p.m. at the Bend in the River Park.

Four trees, two blue spruce and two white firs, will be planted at the Bend in the River Park to honor former mayors James Monroe, Ronald Houle, David Button and current Mayor, Dave Curry. George and Judy Gibson donated the trees.

The Village of Canton was recently awarded a DEC Urban Forestry Grant that will provide for a total of 60 trees to be planted in a “green corridor” over the next three years. The corridor will include Lincoln Street’s DPW building, the Buck Street playground and the Bend in the River Park.

A second, $5,000 grant was awarded by the Scott Paper Company via the St. Lawrence County Soil & Water Conservation District. The grant will be used to plant trees along entryways to Canton.

In addition, a collaboration between the Tree Committee and St. Lawrence University will allow the planting of a dozen white pines along the outfield fence at Bend in the River Park.
