CANTON -- An Arbor Day Celebration, sponsored by the Village of Canton and the Canton Tree Committee will be held Friday, April 29 at 9 a.m. at the corner of Judson and Goodrich streets.
Mayor Mike Dalton will kick off the Arbor Day Proclamation with a reading and assist in planting a tree to replace one that was recently removed at the site. Members of the Canton Tree Committee will be in attendance as well.
In 2015 the Canton Tree Committee and Canton DPW staff and with funding from the DEC, planted 26 trees along the “green corridor” of Lincoln Street, Buck Street, and the Bend in the River Park. Committee members also participated in the Local Living Festival in September to raise awareness of the benefits of trees. The Committee plans on planting 20 or more trees in 2016.
A 2015 DEC grant providing funding for a tree inventory is also in process as a result of efforts by Linda McQuinn, Economic Developer. It is important to conduct a tree inventory to record the number, species and current condition of the trees in our community. With an inventory, we can analyze change in a tree’s condition over time, work out maintenance schedules, develop tree planting schedules and create an overall tree management plan.
Canton was designated a Tree City USA in 2015 and is working on recertification for 2016. A “Tree City USA” sign at a community’s entrance tells visitors that the community cares about its environment. The designation is a source of pride for our community and will enhance our chances of obtaining grants and resource allocations for tree planting projects in the future.
The Canton Tree Committee extends an open invitation to community members to join in its mission to protect and improve the village tree canopy. Current members are: Richard Grover, Tony Beane, Rajiv Narula, Juraj Kittler, Lance Rudiger, Brien Hallahan and Joette Holgado. You may contact Richard Grover at 379-9697, if you are interested in joining the group.
