Annual seed swap Saturday at Elliott's Agway in Winthrop

Posted

WINTHROP -- The second annual Spring Seed Swap will be held at Elliott's Agway, 648 Main St. (Rt. 11C), from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 7.

The free event is open to anyone with seeds to swap, or those who want to swap tall tales about gardening with organizer Jeremiah Curtis and members of the Local Living Venture.

Organizers will provide tables, seed envelopes, markers, cards, labels and some extra free heirloom and organic seeds for those without seeds. Organizers will demonstrate how to save seeds and offer resources and brief talks to help gardeners learn more.

The swap is both for “commercial” seeds that may be left over from last year and for seed varieties saved by local growers. Seed swap categories can include natives, vegetables, unusual edibles, herbs, annuals, perennials and trees/shrubs.

For more information, view “Seed Saving Notes” by Mary-Ann Cateforis of Potsdam at www.SustainableLivingProject.net/resources-links/seed-saving-notes

Those with seeds to swap should bring them in jars, paper bags or plastic zip-close bags, with about 20 seeds in each bag or more for small seeds. If possible, label each bag or envelope with information about the plant's name; soil, sun and watering needs; and where and when the seeds were collected. Seed envelopes will be available.
