MALONE – The Almanzo Wilder Homestead, site of “Farmer Boy” by Laura Ingalls Wilder, opens for the season Saturday, May 26 and will remain open daily until Sept. 30.
The boyhood home of her husband, Almanzo, features the original restored farmhouse and barns reconstructed in the configuration described in the book. Tours, including all major buildings, lasting 60 to 90 minutes, are available at the site, located off NYS Hwy. 11 just east of Malone.
Visitors can also follow a path to the Trout River where the Wilders fished and washed sheep. A picnic pavilion is available for paid visitors. The shell of a replica 1860 schoolhouse is visible but not yet open as further work is continuing.
A gift shop includes a wide selection of Laura Ingalls Wilder books.
Regular hours are Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m., with the last tour each day at 3 p.m.
