CANTON -- Known to be among the world’s premiere musical ensembles, the San Francisco-based Alexander String Quartet musicians return to St. Lawrence University for a free concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in Gulick Theatre located in the Griffiths Arts Center.

The concert will feature works by two early 20th-century composers Anton Webern and Bela Bartok during the first half of the performance. In the second half of the concert, “Adagio and Fugue in C minor” by Mozart and "String Quartet No. 7 in F major" by Beethoven, among other compositions, will be performed.

This year’s program will also feature the world premiere of “Dance Lessons for String Quartet,” composed by Victor E. Marquez Barrios, visiting assistant professor of music at St. Lawrence.

“Dance Lessons is a series of short pieces attempting to replicate, voluntarily and with sound, the kind of involuntary beat displacement evident in an untalented dancer’s movements,” Barrios wrote in his program notes.
